The Padma Awards, one of India’s highest civilian honors, are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day. Eligibility for Padma Awards
Anyone irrespective of caste, occupation, position, or gender is eligible for these awards. However, serving government employees including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible for these Padma awards.
The award seeks to recognize distinguished work and is given for distinguished and exceptional achievements/service in all fields of activities/disciplines. An illustrative list of areas follows:

Posthumous Cases
This award is not given posthumously. However, in highly deserving and rare cases, the government may consider awarding the award posthumously.
Eligibility for a Higher Category of Padma Award
The higher category of Padma Awards can be given to any person only when a period of at least five years has elapsed since the first Padma Awards were conferred. However, in cases of the rarest and most exceptional achievements, exceptions may be made by the Awards Committee.
Decoration
- Sanad (Certificate) and Medal.
- A smaller size replica (miniature) of the main medal is handed over separately to the recipient which he/she may wear during the state/ceremony etc.
- There is no financial grant attached to these awards.
- The award is not equivalent to a title and should not in any way be used as a suffix or prefix to the name of the recipient.

Who can nominate?
The nomination process for Padma Awards 2024 is open to the public. Even self-nomination can be done. Nominations/recommendations are invited online for this award from 1st May to 15th September every year.
Padma Awards 2024 Selection Process
All nominations OR recommendations received for the Padma Awards 2024 are placed before the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted every year by the Prime Minister. No award is given except on the recommendation of the Award Committee. The recommendations of the award committee are presented to the Prime Minister and the President of India for approval. The names of Padma Awards winners are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day.
Ceremony Details
The Padma Awards are presented by the President of India generally in the month of March/ April every time, where the awardees are presented with a Sanad ( Certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The names of the Padma awardees are published in the Gazette of India on the day of the presentation ceremony.
