How did International Women’s Day begin?
The seeds were planted when 15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 to demand shorter hours, higher pay, and the opportunity to vote. A year later the first National Women’s Day was proclaimed by the Socialist Party of America.
Clara Zetkin, a communist activist & supporter of women’s rights, introduced the concept of making the day a worldwide holiday. In the year 1910, she gives a suggestion at a conference of working women in Copenhagen. There were 100 women in attendance from 17 different nations, and they all unanimously supported her proposal.
